Painting a garage door in Phoenix: steel in the sun, dark-color warranties and the right paint

Yes, a steel garage door in Phoenix can be repainted, and the first rule is the color, not the paint: Clopay's painting instructions (effective May 11, 2020) bar black and any color with an LRV of 12 or less on its Coachman doors, and Amarr says non-factory paint voids its paint-finish warranty. The second rule is heat: the direct-to-metal acrylics made for coated steel stop at 110°F and 120°F on the surface, and a steel skin in afternoon sun runs far hotter than the air. Color, then prep, then product. The door is part of our exterior house painting in Phoenix, with rules the door makers wrote themselves.

At a glance

  • Clopay: LRV 0 to 12 not permitted on Coachman doors, 13 to 38 only with solar-reflective paint; recommended, not required, on its other doors (instructions of May 11, 2020)
  • Amarr: non-factory paint voids the paint-finish warranty; pressure-washing the door is an exclusion (Form 842, 11.13.24)
  • Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic: 50°F to 110°F on the surface; recoat in 1 hour at 77°F (data sheet 10/2022)
  • Phoenix normal July high 106.5°F (NCEI, 1991 to 2020); national cost to paint a garage door $200 to $500 (HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026; not a Phoenix or Deci price)

Can you paint a steel garage door in Phoenix, or does it void the warranty?

You can paint it; what you give up is some or all of the factory paint-finish warranty. Amarr's painting page reads "Non-factory painting of garage doors voids the paint finish warranty," and its residential warranty (Form 842, 11.13.24) says the same. Clopay allows field painting under its own instructions, warns that ignoring them "will void warranty of your door," and its Extreme Series warranty (4153482-R01-0323) excludes paint not applied per its specifications after delivery. What that coverage was: Amarr guarantees steel sections against rust-through "due to paint finish cracking, splitting or peeling" (lifetime, 5 or 3 years by model), never surface rust, chips or scratches. Clopay covers cracking, checking or peeling (10 years standard paint on Intellicore models, 5 years on Color Blast) and excludes "Normal Fading or Discoloration from Usage, Age or UV Exposure." Fading and chalk, the two things that send a Valley door to a painter, were outside both warranties. A door that chalked after ten summers has little to lose; a two-year-old door under a lifetime term is a different decision.

How hot does a garage door get in the Phoenix sun, and why does that matter for paint?

Far hotter than the air, and the air is already near the limit. Phoenix's normal July high is 106.5°F, with 28.5 days at or above 100°F (NCEI normals, 1991 to 2020). Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic is rated to 110°F for air, surface and material; its Primer-Finish stops at 120°F. Clopay: "DO NOT apply paint when door surface temperature is different from manufacturer's suggested temperature range for application." A steel skin in direct sun runs past those numbers, often well past what the paint can take, which is why we chased the shade around a metal-sided house in June, reading the surface instead of the thermometer (how we repainted chalky metal siding in Phoenix). A garage door is the same material under the same rule: a west-facing door is a morning job, an east-facing door waits for afternoon shade, and an infrared thermometer on the skin decides, not the weather app.

Is it safe to paint a garage door black or dark in Arizona?

On a Clopay Coachman door, no. The instructions read "Black and very dark colors (when the Light Reflective Value (LRV) is 12 or less) are NOT permitted," LRV 13 to 38 needs "tested and approved solar reflective paint," and 39 to 100 is open. On "All Other Product," solar-reflective paint is recommended at every LRV and required at none. Clopay's factory program, Color Blast, prints the same 12-or-less ban for its Settlers doors on the 2023 sheet (under its Holmes Garage Door Company brand) and supplies solar-reflective Sherwin-Williams Polane whenever the color allows. LRV runs from 0 to 100 with black near 0; what LRV means for how hot a surface gets covers the rest. The makers' own middle path is a color above LRV 38, or one in the 13 to 38 band in a solar-reflective line. Their rule, not a promise from us.

What is thermal bow, and why do the makers warn about dark insulated doors?

Thermal bow is the reason behind every dark-color warning. DASMA Technical Data Sheet 185 (revised 12/20) describes an insulated door as two steel skins laminated to a foam core; when the outer skin runs hotter than the inner one, "the warmer skin will grow relative to the cooler skin and cause the door to bow in the direction of the warmer skin." The sheet says it gets worse with a dark color (a brown door facing the sun bows more than a white one), a south-facing door, an air-conditioned garage, and width: on a 20-foot door the bow "could exceed several inches" without reinforcement. Amarr warns that dark paint "may cause the door to experience thermal-bowing" and calls it inherent, "not considered a product defect." Clopay's warranty excludes thermal bow by name. The fix the sheet names is horizontal struts across the back of the door, not paint.

What prep does a chalky steel door need before paint?

A hand wash, a scuff, a rinse, and paint within 24 hours. Amarr's warranty lists "use of a pressure washer to clean the areas surrounding the garage door or the door itself" among its exclusions, so the stucco gets the pressure washer and the door gets a bucket. Clopay's method does the wash and the scuff in one pass: trisodium phosphate, 1/3 cup to 1-1/2 to 2 gallons of water, worked over the door with a gray 3M synthetic steel wool pad ("gray not green"), then a rinse with clean water, changed often. Sand only where bare metal shows, because "Sanding could remove rust-inhibiting compounds from the steel portion of the door." Chalk is the tell: if a palm wiped across the door comes back the color of the door, it needs this wash first, the same as the metal siding did. Amarr sets the clock: "Paint door within 24 hours after cleaning."

Which primer goes on a steel door, and what is the tape test?

Primer where metal shows, a bonding primer under the color, and a tape pull before the whole door. Amarr: inspect for exposed metal and "Apply primer designed to protect galvanized steel from rusting." Clopay: a bonding primer "is strongly recommended as a first coat to improve adhesion of the top coat of latex paint," and the Sherwin-Williams DTM Acrylic sheet calls for "Bond-Plex Waterbased Acrylic or DTM Bonding Primer" over baked-on factory finishes, plus a prime coat under deep and ultradeep colors. Then Clopay's pre-test, which "must be performed" before the full door: paint a small area, let it dry, press masking tape over it and peel. The paint stays on the door, or you stop and change the paint or the prep. Neither maker allows oil-based paint; Clopay adds "alkyd modified paint" to what voids the warranty.

Which paint holds on a steel garage door: DTM acrylic or regular exterior paint?

A 100% acrylic direct-to-metal coating, the paint both makers describe, built for coated steel. Clopay: "high quality 100% acrylic latex (flat, satin or semi-gloss) exterior grade paint." Amarr: "a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior grade latex paint." A wall acrylic meets the letter; a DTM acrylic adds what the Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic sheet (B66-1150, 10/2022) lists: corrosion resistant, "flash rust-early rust resistance," touch dry in 10 minutes at 110°F, recoat in 1 hour. Fast dry cuts both ways: brushing is limited "to small areas where a wet edge can be maintained," and overspray landing on hot surfaces sticks. Its Primer-Finish (B66W00011, 11/2021) runs to 120°F on steel, galvanized and aluminum. Two coats on steel is the printed system. Clopay's touch-up pick is Sherwin-Williams Resilience, a 100% acrylic rated down to 35°F, 50°F on large metal.

Which local brands sell a direct-to-metal paint for a garage door?

Sherwin-Williams and Behr both sell a 100% acrylic DTM in the Valley, and Dunn-Edwards sells a DTM too. Behr Premium Direct-To-Metal, at Home Depot, names "garage doors" as an ideal use, and its product page sets a tighter window, 50°F to 90°F on air and surface with a 3-hour recoat, a window a Phoenix July morning closes early. Dunn-Edwards Aristoshield (ASHL50, 07/21) names garage doors too and goes direct to metal in two coats over Bloc-Rust Premium or Ultrashield Galvanized Metal Primer.

Should the garage door match the body, the trim or neither? What Valley HOAs say

Usually the scheme sheet already decided. The Highlands at Arrowhead Ranch palette on Dunn-Edwards Color Ark Pro (approved February 15, 2022) lists "Main Body/Garage Door" as one line and says the door "must be painted the stated body color and not a trim color." Marisol's palette goes the other way: "Fascia, Eaves, Garage Door" share one color. Power Ranch's Dunn-Edwards palette reads "Body & Garage Door" on most schemes with a "Pop-outs/Garage Door Option" on some, and Anthem Country Club's Sherwin-Williams page says "Select one Trim Color for trim, pop-outs, and/or garage door." Those are the two Valley conventions: the door in the body color so it recedes, or in the trim color on a two-tone scheme, as on a two-story stucco repaint in Phoenix. A black door in a tan scheme is a change and needs the committee's yes first; getting HOA approval before you repaint walks through the form.

How much does it cost to paint a garage door in Phoenix, and how long does it take?

Nationally, $200 to $500 with most owners near $350, by HomeAdvisor (updated June 20, 2026): single-car $100 to $250, two-car $200 to $500, or $1 to $4 per square foot. Angi (updated September 17, 2026) prints the same $350 average and $200 to $500 range. Those are national figures, not a Phoenix or Deci price. What moves the number here: chalk and rust that add a wash and spot priming, peeling that adds scraping, a deep color that needs a prime coat, a double door over a single, and whether the door rides along with the trim or a full exterior. Timing comes from the sheets, not a promise: Amarr's 24-hour window after cleaning and a 1-hour recoat at 77°F, so wash and primer on one visit and two coats the next morning in shade is the usual shape. In Power Ranch, the 2026 guidelines say repainting the door the same color needs no application. The free estimate settles the rest.

What else gets done while the ladder is at the garage?

The front door first, since it sits on the same scheme sheet and often in the same trim color. Then the fascia and trim above the door, which take the same sun and chalk the same way, the foam pop-outs around the garage opening if the scheme gives them an accent, and any stucco cracks at the garage header, which fall under stucco crack repair before the paint goes on. All of it is part of exterior house painting, and the door is cheapest to quote when it rides along with that setup. Side gates and security doors follow the same metal rules, and we paint the iron in the same visit. Finished exteriors are in our recent exterior projects.

Frequently asked questions

Can you paint a garage door without taking it down or removing the weatherstripping?
Yes. The door is painted in place: closed for the faces of the panels, then raised a section at a time so the joints between sections get coated without gluing them shut. The weatherstripping along the bottom and the jambs is masked or lifted rather than painted, and paint stays out of the hinges, rollers and track. Amarr notes that paint adds weight to a door and can affect the spring settings, one more reason to keep the coats thin and off the hardware.
Brush, roller or sprayer for a steel garage door?
Roller for the flat panels, brush only for the panel profiles and edges, and a sprayer only with the house, driveway and opener masked. The Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial DTM Acrylic sheet lists a 1/4 to 3/8 inch woven roller cover, limits brushing to small areas because the paint dries fast, and warns that overspray landing on hot surfaces sticks. Two coats at 2.4 to 4.0 dry mils each beat one heavy coat on a hot panel.
Should the inside of the garage door be painted too?
Not for protection. Clopay's factory program paints the exterior face and leaves the interior white unless the buyer pays to have it painted, and the makers' heat and warranty rules are about the outside skin. Painting the inside is a looks-only choice, and Amarr points out that paint adds weight that can affect the springs and the opener, so it is one more coat to think about.
Can a steel garage door be painted to look like wood?
It can be done as a faux finish, a base coat in a tan or orange tone with a darker glaze dragged over it to read as grain, which is a decorative process rather than an exterior repaint. Ask us when you request the estimate and we will tell you whether it is something we take on.
What if the garage door is already peeling or bubbling?
Peeling means a coat lost adhesion, either an earlier repaint or the factory finish. If it is the factory finish on a door still under warranty, that is a claim first, since both makers cover cracking and peeling of their own finish. Otherwise the Sherwin-Williams sheet's rule applies: scrape and sand to a sound surface, feather the edges, spot-prime the bare metal and then coat. Warping or rubbing on a dark insulated door after a summer is thermal bow, which no paint fixes; the industry sheet points to struts across the back of the door.
